Optimatics, the world-leading provider of infrastructure planning software that enables water and wastewater utilities around the globe to avoid billions of dollars in costs while ensuring optimal performance, has been selected by the New York City, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for use in their assessment of alternative infrastructure upgrades for the drainage area contributing to the Hunts Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (HP WWTP).

Utilizing the Optimizer software, project firms AECOM and Hazen and Sawyer, along with DEP staff, will assess ways to deliver more flow to the HP WWTP during wet weather conditions, whilst reducing the potential for overflows at its regulating structures. This effort is aimed at meeting State regulations and improving the overall performance of the wet weather collection system.

Said Joshua Cantone, Product Manager with Optimatics, “The DEP and their engineering consultants are evaluating the potential to meet their performance objectives by changing weir height configuration at its regulators. Optimizer will be used to determine the optimal combination of weir settings at each regulator for three storm events, with an intent to normalize the delivery of flow to the HP WWTP and most importantly, reduce or eliminate any overflows.”

Optimizer, a cloud-based optimization software solution, comprehensively analyses wastewater and stormwater collection systems by evaluating hundreds of thousands of asset options and capacity combinations against multiple objectives such as cost, hydraulic performance, energy, and water quality. In contrast to traditional approaches which combine best engineering judgment, trial and error and limited scenario evaluations. Optimizer automates the scenario analysis process and produces many potential combinations that meet the desired requirements. Optimizer allows planners and engineers to focus on effective results and avoid costly overdesigns.
