Optimatics, the world-leading provider of infrastructure planning software that enables water and wastewater utilities around the globe to avoid billions of dollars in costs while ensuring optimal performance, has been selected by DC Water, District of Columbia for a two-part project.
Utilizing the Optimizer software, DC Water staff, supported by engineers from Mott MacDonald, will plan and implement water system improvements to ensure adequate water pressures and proper system operations. Part one of the project will help in developing a calibrated model that can accurately simulate not only pressures and flows but also water age as a surrogate for water quality directly using constituent concentrations. Part two will use that model to optimize operational decisions including locating the most critical system areas for the placement of monitoring equipment to meet DC Water’s design and performance criteria while minimizing project life-cycle costs and other secondary objectives in a multi-objective optimization analysis.
“Being able to provide DC Water with the ability to save significant dollars by ideally locating expensive sensors and equipment is a win for ratepayers and other stakeholders, as the final result can be proven to be the most cost-effective outcome available”, said Product Manager, Dr Joshua Cantone.
Optimizer, a cloud-based optimization software solution, comprehensively analyses water and wastewater systems by evaluating hundreds of thousands of asset options and capacity combinations against multiple objectives such as cost, hydraulic performance, energy, and water quality. In contrast to traditional approaches that combine best engineering judgment, trial and error, and limited scenario evaluations. Optimizer automates the scenario analysis process and produces many potential combinations that meet the desired requirements. Optimizer allows planners and engineers to focus on effective results and avoid costly over-designs.
